Remodels here, there, EVERYWHERE!
If you are a homeowner, you know that it is true when people tell you that the work never ends. There is always some project or another that needs to be done and the list never gets any smaller. Jay and I have been in our house for just over 4 years now and have done a lot since we have been here. But now we are reaching the point where we are going through and doing some things that we didn’t have the money for when we first moved in and had to just be patient and wait.
After my little landscaping makeover, I decided to keep the momentum going with checking off the good ole’ “To Do” list and move onto the kitchen floors. This was something that I have been wanting to do for quite some time now but there were more important things to be done so we just tried to make what he had work for as long as we could. It just so happened that I had stopped into our Big Lots for a few things in particular and just nose around and see if I happened upon any good finds and boy did I! They happened to have some laminate wood flooring on sale for $15.00 a box so it ended up being $1.00 a square foot. Since we are learning to live on a very tight budget these days, I was so excited about this find and it’s budget friendly price. So that is what Jay and I have been working on these past few days.
I was sooooooo happy to say goodbye to my HIDEODEROUS circa 1970′s laminate flooring that now matter how hard I scrubbed, it never appeared clean. I will not even try to deny that my mom’s incessant cleaning genes have been passed on to me and I do indeed completely care what people think of the appearance of my house. Having floors like those, I was seriously embarrassed to have people over for fear that they might look at my floors and think that I am a terrible housekeeper and our house over all was a little on the dirty side.
What we had before:
And the after (also with a new rug that I got a great deal on at Meijers):
After a few long days of hard work, we took advantage of having a Saturday free of plans and head to the pool with the kids. Joel has turned into quite the little fishy and loves, loves, loves to swim. He got to show daddy how he can hold his breath and swim under water.
After we got done swimming, we thought that we were going to come home and enjoy a nice quiet evening at home. Um, NO! As I was sitting at the desk in our front room, I happened to look over and see that our dining room ceiling was quiet literally about to cave in. I yelled for Jay to come and look at it. We got the kids out of the way and tucked safely into the living room. While Jay climbed onto a chair and held the ceiling tiles up, I hurried up and got all of the important things out of the way just as it was coming down on Jay.
This was our view afterwards. Nice, huh?
As we stood there and watched the tiles fall to the floor, I couldn’t help but laugh. Thankfully we were home when it happened. Anyhow, thank goodness there is nothing wrong with the ceiling. We found on the underside of the tiles that they were installed on March 21 of 1965 so I think that it was time they came down anyhow. Underneath was the original plaster ceiling that is in perfect condition so after considering all of our choices, we decided that we would rip down the 2×4′s and go back to the original 9.5 foot ceilings. So, even though we were caught off guard and weren’t planning on so much remodeling, I will finally get to repaint the walls like I’ve been wanting too and hopefully be refinishing the original hardwood floors as well. Might as well just go the distance at this point
I hope that you all had a more uneventful weekend than we did here.
Be looking for more pictures to come of our new and improved dining room!

Hahaha I remember that flooring! My mom and dad also had that in their house in the bathroom that was mine and Trina’s. Not the most fashionable! And it was the same color.
