Tasty Tuesday and a Family Fun Giveaway
What a beautiful day we were blessed with! The sun was shining beautifully and it was just absolutely perfect. On Tuesday mornings the kids and I head to church for Bible study. Well, I go to study, they go to play with their friends. Normally we head straight home afterwords because Caroline is falling apart by that time. But once we got outside the church and saw how beautiful it was we decided to head to the park for a little bit. Needless to say, Caroline did not enjoy our trip one bit because she was being a fuss butt. She was terrified of the swing and the slide and just wanted to walk around throwing a fit and holding onto my leg. Oh well. I brought that onto myself. I just couldn’t let such a nice day go to waste and wanted to be outdoors enjoying it. Joel on the other hand practically had to be drug off the playground but decided to willingly come with me once I told him he had his swim lessons this evening and needed to get rest so he had lots of energy to swim off. Worked like a charm.
Joel loves to play at the park but loves even more to spend the time with other kids. I have a feeling that I am going to have my hands full with him when he gets to school age. He will be one of those kids. You know what I mean, the “social butterfly” that gets in trouble for talking too much. When we first got to the park this afternoon we were the only ones there. After a little while a little boy Joel’s age and his mommy came. Joel needed to make that little boy his friend. He just marches right up there and introduces himself like this: “Hi my names Joel! I’m three (holding up his fingers to show him). I like Buzz Lightyear (pointing to his shirt). So off he and his new BFF go acting like they have known each other forever. Soon another little boy and his grandma come along and he tells friend #1 (Alan) “Let’s go say hi to that boy and see if he wants to play with us.” He must get this from his dad because I was painfully shy when it came to strangers when I was younger. Once I told him that it was time to go he told me he had to go say bye to Alan and Owen. What a kid.
Ok so on to the purpose of this post (Sorry. It doesn’t take much for me to stray from the topic.) Jay and I love to BBQ once it gets nice out and one of my favorite things to have is grilled chicken with homemade BBQ sauce. Every time I make this homemade sauce, it reminds me of my mom.
Recipe: BBQ Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 c. Brown Sugar
- 1 c. Ketchup
- 2 tsp. Mustard
- 2 T. White Vinegar
- 2 t. Worcestershire
- Pinch of Salt
- Pepper
- Onion (1 small)
- Water, if needed
Instructions
- Mix together all ingredients and if needed, add water to thin it out.
Quick Notes
I usually don’t add water if you like it thicker. If you are going to do grilled chicken, marinade your meat in it all day or you can just pour it over you chicken to bake it in the oven. When I bake it, I like to top it off with some french fried onions the last 10-15 minutes before it is done baking.
Recipe: Broccoli Coleslaw
Ingredients
- 1 Package Broccoli Coleslaw (Rainbow Salad Mix)
- 2 Packages Ramen Noodles (Beef)
- 1 c. Slivered Almonds
- 1 c. Sunflower Seeds
- 1/2 c. Vegetable Oil
- 1/2 c. Sugar
- 1/3 c. White Vinegar Flavor packets from the Ramen Noodles
Instructions
- Break up the ramen noodles (place in a ziploc bag and roll with a rolling pin)
- Place the first 4 ingredients together.
- Mix the last 4 ingredients together for the dressing.
- Top the salad with the dressing just before serving so it doesn’t get soggy.

It sure was a beautiful day yesterday, I think everyone is ready for spring this year.
Love your blog Emily, you’re an inspiration.
The cole slaw recipe sounds yummy.
I seen the “Blind Side” and is an awesome movie that I will like to have, is it out on DVD already?
Enjoy the rest of the week.
Thanks for sharing the recipes. Mike loves bbq, so I will definitely have to give the sauce a try. Lydia wants us to cook out tomorrow…yay Spring!
Never got around to seeing the Blind Side, so it would be really cool to win it! Thanks for the opportunity.
I love your recipes you post…I think a recipe exchange would be alot of fun on here, we all have favorite recipes we could share. Maybe we could have a theme each time….salad, dessert, vegetable, casserole, etc.
What a fun idea for a give-away. I cannot get Tom to go to the movies and I have been wanting to see The Blindside. Hope I win !! Enjoy the beautiful weather coming up for the next couple of days
I have a friend who used to live down from us who also has a blog, you would love her, she is Bryan’s age and now lives out East. I will pass along her website
I have not had the pleasure of seeing this movie, but thank Goodness there are still people willing to make movies with integrity…the recipes are fun, and that bbq sauce sounds like what our family makes…keep sharing the recipes Em….
Hi, Emily!
I have read all your blog posts and love that you share recipes, memories of your mom and the fun you have with your famiy.
I absolutely LOVED the movie “The Blindside” since Tim has been unemployed for 17 months it was a big deal for us to go to this movie on Thrifty Tuesday’s here in Dayton. Marissa hasn ‘t seen it and I would also love to share it with my parents along with the other goodies. A family movie night tradition would be wonderful thing for us to start.
I think of all of you so often. May God continue to bless you on your journey and thanks for encouraging us along the way.
Love, Kelly
I havent seen the movie yet, but I will if I win
Everyone said it was so good and I cant wait to watch it!!
This is the first time I have visited your blog but I like what I see. Loved the recipes that you shared, I am a cookbook addict and I always love finding new recipes. I can’t wait to try the broccoli slaw.
Hi Emily! I just wanted to say that I was the social butterfly that you speak of in school
I was always getting into trouble by talking to my friends and for talking “too loud” as my teachers would put it. I just never thought we had enough time to talk to our friends while we were at school
It’s so good that Joel likes to make friends and that he doesn’t have a problem going up to a new face and just starting a conversation! That will help him go farther in life when he gets older, since he won’t be shy, he’ll be great at interviews.
I don’t typically cook (Jeff does and loves to), but when I read your recipes, they make me want to go out and get the supplies I’ll need and cook something
They way you talk about cooking too, makes it sound like fun. I’ve just had a few experiences before that have made me feel like I just can’t do it. This coleslaw recipe sounds like a good one as a side dish for Easter. I might just have to try making it and taking it to the Easter dinners we’ll have to go to.
I’ve heard this movie is amazing, but we have yet to be able to see it. I’ve just now started to be able to leave Sophie places, so because of that, Jeff and I hardly ever go anywhere together. And with me being pregnant again and getting closer to the end of the pregnancy it’s hard for me to move anymore
I’ve read some of the things you’ve written about going out with Jay and having date nights, and it really makes me want to get better about being able to leaving Sophie with family. Seeing a mom being able to go out and hearing that it’s ok, is encouraging and very helpful for me, so thank you!
Thank you SO much for this blog. It’s so nice to read and get encouraging words from you….and the recipes sound SO yummy too!
Have an AWESOME day and holiday next week!
